Types of Garage Door Openers
The strongest and most cost effective
The LiftMaster chain drive operator uses a solid chain and rail to drive the door. This is the strongest system although it generally makes a little more noise than the other types of openers. LiftMaster makes three different levels of chain drive openers that range from the value-oriented 81600 to the premium ultra quiet and strong 87802 which works great on even the heaviest wood garage doors.
The very quiet belt drive motor
The LiftMaster belt drive operator uses a Kevlar-reinforced rubber belt to drive the door. This is the quietest system and includes a shock absorber to reduce the strain on the gears and increase operator life. LiftMaster makes three levels of belt drive openers that range from the value-oriented 84505R to the premium ultra quiet and strong 87504-267.
The best for high-lifted doors
The LiftMaster 98022 jack shaft operator connects directly to the door’s torsion shaft and uses no rail. This is a system that can be used in an application where no rail is desired, like a high lift or vertical lift application. The jack shaft is also a great operator for light duty commercial applications.

Linear
The Linear brand of operator is reliable, quite, and is typically found where the customer has a linear gate operator and wants to use an garage door opener that is compatible with the same remote. This typically happens in apartment complexes. We service linear operators.
Marantec
Marantec operators are German in design and are very quiet. In Austin, they tend to be found in homes built 10 to 15 years ago. They were a favorite of builders because of their low noise and low cost. They do have a great warranty. We install these in locations where customers already have a Marantec operator and want another.
Sommer
The Sommer operator is a unique German operator with a lot of clever designs and is also extremely quite. We use these operators on Swing out custom doors.
Genie
Genie operators have been around for many years. In our opinion they have varied in quality over the last 15 years but seem to be improving greatly recently. They are typically selected by volume builders due to their price and packaging with builder type garage doors. We will work on these operators and do carry some stock items for the most frequent issues we see with these operators. These operators can be found in Big Box stores also at appropriately cheap prices.
Garage Door Connectivity
Today, garage door openers are smarter than ever. Many can provide alerts on whether your garage is open, when it was opened, and how long it’s been open. Many allow you to open or close them from your phone.
The LiftMaster MyQ connectivity system allows you to monitor and control your garage door from your MyQ app on your smart phone or from any web interface.
