The question often arises about what Garage Door opener (Operator) is best. Let me start off my answer with saying that we honestly believe that the best Brand is "LIFTMASTER". It is made by Chamberlain, the same company that makes the Sears Craftsman series of openers. There are many similarities with Craftsman but there are also a few major differences. In my mind always buy LiftMaster. Here are the reasons;

A note about the economic conditions in the Austin Texas area as related to the Garage Door business.
Early in the year things were on the downslide. This was evidenced by many of the more established companies in town experiencing downturns or going out of business. Our Business saw a decrease in sales of approx 10% from last years numbers. Two of the major manufacturers in Texas closed shop, ANKMAR and ABLE doors. We received calls from many people who owned their own companies looking for work. Even the one man operations experienced considerable pressure. Being a guy with a pickup truck does not always mean less overhead and cheaper prices, especially with the rising costs of Back Child Support, Parole Fees, Tax penalties, Lawyer fees, and court costs. Major distributors in town have gone out of business or been sold in the last month (Door World, Austin Overhead Door). The economy has had a big effect on the door business, but it could have been worse.
One of the biggest stimulus events in town happened in March when a large hail storm struck north Austin. While the effects have been slow to trickle down, they have been noticed and the result is an increase in business over last year of about 10%. Even now calls are coming in for doors which were damaged in the storm. Homeowners have waited until the roofs were fixed and then focused on the doors. With the Tax rebate, more people are focusing on insulated doors to cut energy cost and to make the garage more livable in the hot summer months.
Door Prices have come down slightly due to the cost of steel decreasing. Many door manufacturers are giving back small amounts of the price increases they took last year, but the prices are not nearly the same.
To summarize, I would say that things here are much better than the rest of the country while they have slowed considerably from last year. Growth is possible, but difficult. Advertising is critical and great customer service is mandatory.
